American Academy of Professional Coders
The American Academy of Professional Coders (AAPC) was founded in 1988 to provide education and professional certification to physician-based medical coders and to elevate the standards of medical coding by providing student training, certification, ongoing education, networking, and job opportunities. Since then, AAPC has expanded beyond outpatient coding to include training and credentials in documentation and coding audits, inpatient hospital/facility coding, regulatory compliance, and physician practice management. Currently, AAPC has a membership base over 141,000 worldwide, of which nearly 98,000 are certified.
AAPC credentialed coders have proven mastery of all code sets, evaluation and management principles, and documentation guidelines. They represent the best in the medical coding career field.
Certifications
AAPC certifications encompass the entire business side of healthcare, with professional service coding (CPC®), hospital outpatient (CPC-H®) and hospital inpatient (CIC™) coding, payer perspective coding (CPC-P®), professional billing (CPB™), medical auditing (CPMA™), medical compliance (CPCO™), and physician practice management (CPPM™). All certifications demonstrate a strong hands-on, working knowledge to support cleaner claim submission, faster reimbursement, fewer denials, and better run practices and facilities. Specialty coding credentials are currently offered in more than 20 different fields of expertise. AAPC offers continuing education for all our credentials through local chapters, workshops, webinars, a monthly newsmagazine (Healthcare Business Monthly), other publications, and conferences.
Education
AAPC educational offerings cover both pre-certification needs and post-certification CEU requirements. See our Training page for more information about educational services.
